How to Add a Favicon to Your Blog
In my pursuit to build a totally awesomer blog-site, I'm doing a lot of internet and book research. I hope to learn a thing or twelve but we'll see how that goes. Lately, I have trouble remembering what day of the week it is, so I wouldn't be surprised if very little new information can be retained at this point. However, any information I do absorb? I intend to pass along to all-a-y'all.
So on that note (and many of you brilliant ones may have already guessed this by the title of this post, but): GUESS WHAT?
I HATH LEARNED ME SOMETHING USEFUL AND GOODLY!

Do you know what a favicon is? It's that cute little personalized icon next to a website's address. Wanna know how to make one? Yes? Good, because I'm going to tell you anyway. If you have Photoshop:
The icon needs to be 16 x 16 pixels. Your icon will be teeny-tiny, so don't design anything too intricate. This site details how to make a Favicon beautifully and also links to places where you can get inspiration for the Best Favicon Ever. (Yours, of course.)
Make sure you download that Photoshop plug-in or you won't have the .ico file format available to you. Once you've downloaded it, find your Photoshop folder, and within it your File Formats folder, and place the .8bi file in there. Restart Photoshop. Now you'll have the .ico format available to choose from when you Save As.
Don't have Photoshop? Or just want life to be easier for you?
You can create an icon from a picture you already have! Try this site. They do all the work for you!
There's also a program called IconEdit32 that you can download that allows you to make little icons...Just Google it.
Everybody together now...
People with personal websites put the .ico file in their home directory - but we bloggers don't have access to those sorts of things! So we need to upload it to a site where we can link to it. Unfortunately, Flickr will convert it to a .jpeg - and most other sites can't handle .ico files either.
So wanna know how to do upload that sucker? Okay! Ready? Here we go.
You go to Ripway.com and sign up for a free account! At Ripway, they let you upload ANY type of file! WOO HOO!
Adding it to your Blawwwwg:
Go into your Blogger template. Directly below the "head" tag (in the very first few lines of code), paste the code below - only substitute the address of where your icon is located in place of my sample address.
<link rel="icon" href="http://example.com/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" /><link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://example.com/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
Firefox: If you're using Firefox, it should show up on its own because Firefox rocks. (The rest of you should download Firefox here and never look back.)
Internet Explorer: You're probably pissed right now and yelling some variant of "Why isn't that shit showing up, yo?!?"
Here's why: Internet Explorer is pretty retaaaaded. (Say in a Boston accent for maximum effect.)
If you are using IE, please add your own site to your Favorites. Then close IE and open it back up.
Safari: Per Lauren, you need to empty your cache for it to work (Safari --> Empty Cache). (Thanks, Lauren!)
UPDATED TO ADD: I have Illustrator and Photoshop. If you would like me to make you a Favicon, just let me know. If you have an idea of what it should look like, let me know. Otherwise, I'll check out your site and just come up with one on my own. This is fun!

31 fruit lovers (or haters) had something to say...
I'm still too scared to visit blogs at my government job. But I'm sure I will someday.
Thanks for the tip, I always wondered about those little icons, I'll have to come up with one!
Oooooo, you so smart!!! I'm going to try that very, very soon. I love yours!!!!
awesome! LB is brilliant! I was actually just asking a coworker if she would make me one yesterday. I just can't figure out what to put in my 16 pixels...
Hot damn! I always wondered about that but how do you do it if you don't know what it's called? But now I know - that's awesome! I'm gonna find a teeny budgie picture for mine.
We must have stumbled (googled) upon the same article. Am currently pondering my choice. Yours hasn't shown up in Safari yet, but I just cleared my cache, so I'll check back in a flash.
Banana, this was so incredibly useful and cool! Thanks for posting it!
And now my icon is my painting! Yay!
Thank you for sharing- all of this blog jargon is still a mystery to me, so every little tutorial helps.
YOu are my blogging goddess. I've always wanted a cool icon-thingy. Now my sats will surely go through the roof!! :-)
Finally I'm getting something good for all the tax dollars I pay. Thanks for the info!
Ah, Safari users- empty your cache, Safari> empty cache, and it'll work. Go Banana!
Banana.
Thanks for the guidance on blogging. I'm a computer moron and I'm not ashamed to say it. My blog site is totally unattractive. I'll take a couple deep breaths (I'm a little afraid to try new things)and see if I can use your helpful hints and make a better blog. You da best.
I love your banana favicon!! I'm not sure what I'll choose for mine...maybe a walnut since LawNut is an anagram of walnut??
You're like a teacher or something... cool! Can I take names next time you're out of the room?
Whee!!! I did it!!
Wow. Sounds fun. But stupid Corell killed all photo editing abilities on my computer. Methinks I will invest in Photoshop one of these days. It would be fun to have one of those little Favicon things. I'd always wondered how it got there! lol
holy crap lady, you're good at this stuff. i like your bananan icon. i will now add an orange for my favicon. because i am about the other fruit, you see;-)
revamping your site? but it's already one of the coolest, most awesome-looking ones on the blogosphere! seriously, how did you get a custom header on your page? I want one...
thanks for the info...
e:) - as long as it's not a pic of budgie smugglers!
Woa now, was that in English?? I'm sorry, I don't speak "blog." Haha. I'm content just reading your blog, my job doesn't require me to know about favicons just yet....
lb - some liberal bashing is transpiring on my Wednesday blog! come stand up for our kind! lol...
Okay. Now I know who to go to with Internet-ish questions.
I bow before your technical knowledge. :)
Thanks for the info, and for clearing up that mystery for me. I always thought that in order to get your own personal icon next to your URL you had to send your firstborn and a lock of your hair to Bill Gates.
(Out of curiosity, what would you choose as my icon? Be nice, now.)
I have ALWAYS wondered how to do that! THANK YOU!!
Wowee! I'm bookmarking this page. Thanks LB!
It woooooooooooorked!
THANK YOU!
Awesome, works like a charm! Thanks for the tip, ma'am!
yay!
It worked! Thanks so much for the tip :)
This is a super old post, but hopefully you'll still see this comment.
Do you have any idea whether FavIcons work in Typepad blogs? :)
I finally got mine to work...I made it MONTHS ago, but couldn't figure out how to upload it to my template. Just did it today and it worked liked butter. THANKS!
I don't know if you still even check your comments, but I made myself a cute little favicon thanks to you! You made it so easy that i actually got it right on the first try without messing my entire blog up. And that pretty much never happens. So, thank you!
cool website. check out addthis.com and try using it to increase sharing/bookmarking on your blog.
