Welcome to The Banana Makeup Show!
Sorry, sorry - I know this was supposed to be posted yesterday! The day went something like this though:
Woke up at 7 am at Boyfriend's house, took Barky for a walk, ate breakfast, came home, went back to sleep for two hours. Then after another walk with Barky, I went out to the pool for an hour, showered, went to the grocery store, and then got started on this here Beautification Project.
Not only did I do my make-up, but...I colored my hair! And for the first time ever (oh I can hear my hair guy groaning from miles away)...I cut it myself, too! I know, I know. I'm insane. But it was just a smidgeon off of the ends (uh, duh - of course OFF OF THE ENDS) to clean it up a bit.
Thankfully, it turned out fine! You'll see at the end of this post.
Then, I put on my new dress and we went out to a nice dinner to celebrate my new look. Afterwards, we took Barky on a "late-night" walk and then went to bed. So that's why there was no post yesterday as promised!
Okay, so ready to see how I do my makeup? Alright, here we go. Please don't laugh at the before pictures. I know, I'm one ugly mo-fo before I get to my mascara and lip gloss. I could not function without them.

Here are all of the tools I used for my makeup application. Don't be scared; I know it looks like a lot. On a normal day, it takes me about 20 minutes and I do it on the bus on the way to work. I am a pro at Bus Makeup Application Techniques, or the BMATs. (I think Kaplan has a test prep program for those if anyone else wants to get their certification.)
So here's the before picture. Gob help us all.I look so tired! You know how we all have at least one thing we hate about our faces? Mine is the under-eye area. If there's an area on me that I always want to Photoshop, that is it. (By the way, none of these photos have been altered other than cropping and reducing their size.)
The first thing I do is put concealer on the "bad" areas. (Damn you, bad areas!) For today's makeup, I put on foundation, which I only use for special occasions. I bought mine at Sephora where they helped me match a tone to my skin. However, that is ALL I bought there because you can get acceptable makeup brushes and eyshadows, etc. at CVS. I apply my foundation with my fingers because it gives the most natural application. I pour a tiny bit of the liquid into the palm of one hand and then my other hand to apply it to my face. You don't need much; a little goes a long way!
Then, I use my loose powder. I dip the powder brush into it, tap the "excess" off, and then brush the powder over my entire face. It sets the liquid foundation. (The pressed powder pictured above is for touch-ups throughout the day.)
The next thing I do, which most of you probably do not have to, is fill in my eyebrows with a brow pencil. I overplucked my eyebrows when I was a teenager and now they're quite meager. (Huge regret!) I just fill it in the inner-most area to give them a tiny bit more substance. *sigh*
Then, I curl my eyelashes.Like how my hair is coming out of its barrette? HOTT.
I recommend pulling your hair out of your face during this whole process, by the way.
I love the look on my face. Like I am so goddamn tired. (That's how I feel right now. As soon as I finish this post I am going to take a nap before I go to the shelter!)
Then I do eyeliner. I trace a medium-thin line along the upper eyelid and then lightly line the bottom eyelid. I line the entire top from side to side, but for the bottom I only go along the outside corners. I don't draw on the "moist" part closest to the actual eye, I go along the base of the eyelashes. I don't make the bottom eyelid very dark because otherwise it looks to harsh. (You don't even have to do the bottom at all! It all depends on the shape of your eyes and the look you're going for.)
Next is eyeshadow. For a long time, I wasn't wearing eyeshadow and then I noticed what a huge difference it can make in the way you look. If it's done right, it'll brighten up your whole face. The most important thing is to find a creamy white color with some sheen to it for under the outside corners of your eyebrows, the inside of your eye-area (on the sides of your nose), and HERE'S THE KICKER: the inner-bottom part of your eye. THAT makes a big difference. It makes your eyes look bright and alive.
I used slightly shimmery pale color to go over pretty much the entire eye area. Then I put the white accents on. Then I took a shimmery light purple color to go over my eyeliner (this softens the look) and put a darker purple color under the bottom eyelashes (only on the outside edge of the eye - not along the entire bottom). Finally, I put a medium brown color in the crease area - focusing on the outside edge of the eye and then tapering as I got closer to the inside of the eye. This creates a bit of depth.
It's mascara time! I use regular old Maybelline and it works wonderfully. But what I bet you don't know is that using an old toothbrush is a great way to clean up any mascara "clumps." (Remember the girl whose wedding I was in last summer who has since stopped talking to me for reasons unknown? Her mom taught her this trick, and she taught me.)I do top and bottom lashes.

We're almost done! Normally I put these on before I leave the house so that I don't have to deal with applying powder on the bus (not something you read every day, huh?) but when I'm at home preparing for a special occasion, I save them for last so that I don't mess them up at all while applying my eye makeup.
You can't see it very well in this photo, but the bronzer adds just a bit of color and a nice subtle "sparkle" to your face. (NOT like GLITTER. Just a "glowing" look.) The kind I got was from Bonne Bell and I love it. I use the big powder brush to apply this as well. Just tap the "excess" off before brushing it on.
Then I add some blush (also has a tiny bit of "sheen" to it) if I want to give my face a little bit more color. I sweep the brush from mycheeks up towards my ears. Don't use too much or you'll look like you're having heat stroke all day long.
And the last step: lip gloss or lipstick! It really brings the whole thing together, no? Just remember - if you're going to use a lot of dark colors around your eyes, make your lips subtle. If you're doing subtle eyes, go nuts with your lips. Or in my case today, I kept it all kind of simple.

37 fruit lovers (or haters) had something to say...
Uh, you left out the picture of the ugly mo-fo. You're a very pretty woman in any case, but I agree that a little emphasis of your eyes helps. Nicely done. Still, I'm not going to try any of this at home.
WOW, can you come do my make-up? um, is there a baby yet?
girlfriend, you do this on the bus? where do you lay out all that equipment you've labeled so thoroughly?
bill is right, btw... the before and after are equally attractive... I bet if you ask BF he'll tell you that your "just woken up" look is incredibly cute... some of us like that...
Ooooo! Makeup. Why have I never posted about makeup? I'm such an addict. You do a beautiful job using basic tools. Although, I did notice you have 3 different eyeshadow compacts. Why is it so darn hard to find the three colors you really want all together?? I buy individual containers, but it's not necessarily less expensive.
I'm impressed with your use of bronzer. Since I stopped going out into the sun, bronzer doesn't give me a nice glow, it just makes me look like I'm wearing bronzer. (Strangely, I believe my skin tone is darker than yours, too.) You've inspired me...I'll keep trying. I want to be all natural and glowing, too!
You are THE MOST instructive blogger ever -- and I am loving you for it!!
I have always been easily confused by eye makeup. Your eye makeup seems so complex that I have decided: If I'm ever in the D.C. area (it's possible, since Mr. J. lived there for 5 years), we'll meet in a public place (so you know I'm not stalking you) and you will personally give me a makeup lesson. I'll pay you for your time. Seriously. I DID learn one new thing in some magazine in an article entitled, "what makeup artists can't live without" and that was eyeshadow base. I love it and I think it makes my eyeshadow (the sorry-ass job I do at it) look much better. But then again, maybe I'm blind from poking myself in the eye so many times with an eyeliner pencil.
I really like your new hair color! It's subtle, but very pretty.
Okay, I think this sounds fun/easy. I think I have all the items needed, except loose powder. And a better foundation (I may need to stop at Sephora tomorrow).
I think I'm going to print out this post and hang it in my bathroom to help me get ready.
Hooray for all the time you spent putting this together. What a GREAT post.
(any hello...you are so lovely. Both "before" and "after"!)
Hey, that's how I do my makeup too! Wait, did I just say that out loud? Scratch that.
The part about blush brings to mind one of my favorite Simpsons quotes: "Only whores use rouge, ladies pinch."
I always wondered about this stuff, until one day when my girlfriend tried to show me.
I looked like a tart, but she thought it was funny.
ok, with that before picture there is a sort of "Nicole arrested for making a scene at a Washington Nationals game" vibe, but it's still a good pic... lol ;-)
The step by step guide is very interesting though if I get caught trying it I would rapidly discover the downside of being married to a divorce attorney.
Gievn that you started beautiful I suspect rather greater quantities might be need in my case ... or a paper bag of some kind.
I am loving the toothbrush trick! I actually just went to the dentist last week and they gave me a new toothbrush. I now have something to do with my old one instead of throwing it away. Thanks!
I'm always impressed by the women putting make-up on on the bus. It seems so... dangerous. Especially the eyeliner. Lipstick, yes. Eyeliner, no.
I keep thinking I should start trying to wear make-up on a regular basis. Which I don't currently because I'm lazy. But then I'd have to get up earlier. And I haven't quite figured out how to do such a dramatic transformation.
You look GREAT, but that looks like a lot of work.
I can't believe you CUT YOUR OWN HAIR. Don't you know how disastrous that could have been? BANANA!
I'm NOT good at doing the eyes. I can never work out what to put where. I figured out the light stuff all over, but am not ever sure where to put that darker line of stuff. And I'll have to try the white eyeshadow tip.
I totally agree with you on the minimalist foundation thing.
BTW... I'm going to the baseball again tomorrow night. The question is, will we run into eachother again?!?! Lol.
Wow, you're gorgeous. I am thinking I need to spend more time on my makeup regimen. ;-)
I love me some white eyeshadow under the brow arches. I had a friend who could. not. understand the whole white eyeshadow thing. And then? She bought some. Hee.
Very fun.
I actually don't think it's possible for you to NOT look beautiful...honestly. You are one strikingly gorgeous woman, before and after. And I never tire of looking at photos of you.
You do eyeshadow really well. I'm not so good at the eyeshadow application :(
This was the bestest thing that I read today (aside from Kristen's news). Kinda like, smart funny Cosmo. If such a thing were possible.
I'll have you know that I just went out and bought myself some white eyeshadow. I think I have everything else to pull this off. Let's see if Alex's daycare teacher is impressed in the morning.
Thanks for a most entertaining AND informative post!
OMG, for the longest time I've been trying to figure out how to get the eyeshadow to work like that!!! ...and I thought I was halfway decent in my applique! HAHA, was I wrong.
Thanks a million for the pointers!!! How the hell do you do all that on a BUS????
...PSST...don't be so hard on yourself...your before picture wasn't bad at all!! You should see MY dark circles. UGH. We're always our harshest critics, though, right? Right.
THis was the single most useful post anywhere on the web in a long time. I used to know all this stuff when I was a teenager but I needed the reminders and product updates. THANK YOU.
Call me old fashioned, but I think you look lovely in the before picture too.
What a wonderful makeover!
(Although I hope you know we all love you just the way you are - even first thing in the morning with no makeup on!!)
Excellent before and after post! I'd do that but I don't wear makeup. More, excellent insight into the LB.
PUHAHAHAHA...you're adorable and hilarious! haha...I thought I was reading a "how to" on ivillage.com or something. Anyways, I may further examine your instructions on eye makeup application. I'm horrible at it. Also, I never put enough makeup on so that when I'm out and about my friends are like "you have makeup on???" The ONLY time my makeup was right was for my wedding when I paid an arm and a leg for it to be done professionally. I was soo amazed at the results! I'd never looked better in photos in my life and it was all due to the makeup. I liked every single photo (there were like 600+). I wish I was rich enough to pay for that lady to do my face everyday. =(
So, um, you are freakin' adorable. I just loved that post. I really need to learn how to do makeup.
P.S. - You have really great skin!
